Altimeter - the quinessential Napa Valley Mountain Vineyard in the gorgeous Atlas Peak AVA. Situated on the western slopes of the Vaca Mountain Range and boasting elevation up to 2,663 feet, Atlas Peak is the most prominent peak in the Napa Valley. Vineyards were first planted on Atlas Peak in 1870 and was recognized as an AVA in 1992 and known for expressive mountain Cabernet Sauvignons displaying intense flavors and delicate, balanced acidity with tannins that enamor wine enthusiasts and collectors alike. Just below, and to the south of famed Pritchard Hill, Atlas Peak grapes enjoy long, warm summer days, but are afforded the chance to cool down at night thanks to the increased diurnal temperature variation (upwards of 30 F). The soils in the AVA are mostly volcanic and highly porous, which aids drainage and allows the vines to cool down quickly. This kind of terroir lends itself naturally to lower-yield, but higher-quality wines.
